Tampa's Savatage spent the late '80s quietly building one of heavy metal's most ambitious catalogs, blending crushing riffs with a theatrical scope that set them apart from their peers long before the rock opera format became their signature. The Gutter Ballet album marked a genuine turning point, pushing the band toward the grandiose arrangements that would eventually lead to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Hearing that evolution captured live, with Criss Oliva's guitar work at full force, is the real prize here.
Savatage’s explosive 1990 official live show from the North American leg of the legendary Gutter Ballet tour is becoming available for the first time ever.
"Madness Reigns From The Gutter (1990)" captures the band during a pivotal moment following the breakthrough success of "Gutter Ballet", which many fans consider their absolute live peak. The recording presents Savatage more powerful, heavier, more theatrical and dynamic than ever before.
Carefully restored from the original master tapes and newly mixed and mastered, this previously unreleased show features the classic 1990 line-up: Jon Oliva, Criss Oliva, Chris Caffery, Johnny Lee Middleton and Steve “Doc” Wacholz. Following more than 100 shows across Europe and North America during this era, the recording reflects the full intensity and ambition of the band at the time.
The album is a true gem for Savatage’s dedicated fanbase as well as the broader classic and heavy metal audience, for whom the "Gutter Ballet" era marks a defining chapter in the band’s history. It also holds strong appeal for collectors and vinyl buyers, positioning it as an attractive catalogue release driven by both nostalgia and collector demand.
“The Gutter Tour was Savatage at its live show peak,” says Jon Oliva. “It was six months where madness definitely reigned in the gutter. Enjoy it, friends!”
