Wayne Shorter's quartet concerts in his final years were something close to sacred for those lucky enough to witness them, built on spontaneity and near-telepathic interplay rather than fixed arrangements. The Detroit Jazz Festival has long been one of the great free jazz celebrations in America, and capturing Shorter's ensemble in that open-air, communal setting preserves exactly the kind of unrepeatable moment his live performances were known for.
Wayne Shorter is arguably the greatest living jazz composer and a key participant in some of the most iconic jazz recordings of all time
