New Zealand's Flying Nun Records scene quietly reshaped indie rock's DNA through the 1980s, and The Chills were among its brightest, most restless minds. *Submarine Bells* marked Martin Phillipps bringing that Dunedin-forged sensibility to a wider stage, a moment where the lo-fi intimacy of the South Pacific underground met genuine studio craft without losing any of its strangeness or heart.
The Chills’ second album from 1990 is their much-praised major label debut. A rich tapestry of sound built around Martin Phillipps’ off-kilter vocal; all accent, all attitude, it reels around folk-like couplets with brusque punk swagger fed through psychedelic hues; so timeless it still simmers beautifully. It includes the effervescent, euphoric opener ‘Heavenly Pop Hit’.
