Released when Nas was just 20 years old, Illmatic compressed the entire scope of Queensbridge life into nine tracks and 39 minutes, with production from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, and Large Professor anchoring some of the most precise lyricism hip-hop has ever seen. The XX edition spreads that landmark 1994 debut across two LPs, giving the grooves room to breathe and the sonics their proper weight.
"With Illmatic, I didn't think about it. I just did it. I believe everybody has good instincts. Now I m a man from that past and I'm supremely grateful. There's a Nigerian proverb 'What is past is prologue'. I'm here today because of Illmatic." - Nas
