Kirk Knuffke has built a reputation in the free jazz and creative improvisation world as a cornetist whose sound carries both lyrical warmth and genuine adventurousness. Marilyn Crispell, a longtime collaborator of Anthony Braxton, brings decades of exploratory piano work to this session, making her presence here less a guest appearance than a true meeting of equals.
The act of improvisation between artists of deep understanding and appreciation can be truly breathtaking, these voices illuminating images on an aural canvas. Longtime friends and collaborators cornetist Kirk Knuffke and bassist Thommy Anderson invited the legendary pianist/improviser Marilyn Crispell to perform with them. Meeting in Crispell's haunts of Upper New York, the trio recorded Paintbrush, a tremendous collection of thoughtful and illustrative pieces with a focus on improvisation.
