Paul Hanson has spent decades pushing the bassoon into territory its classical origins never anticipated, earning a reputation among serious improvisers as one of the most adventurous voices working outside genre boundaries. Sharing a studio floor with Charlie Hunter and Jeff Sipe is no casual pairing; those are musicians who treat live ensemble chemistry as the whole point, not an afterthought.
The Outer Banks, releasing via Abstract Logix, finds Hanson surrounded by similarly committed improvisers, including guitarist Charlie Hunter, drummer Jeff Sipe, keyboardist Bill Stevens, guitarist Isaac Hadden, bassist John Daniel Ray, and drummer Calvin Napper. Recorded live at Ovation Sound in Winston-Salem, North Carolina with very minimal overdubs, the album is both polished and crackling, pulling jazz, funk, classical, and ambient influences into a coherent, frequently surprising tapestry.
