David Anthony Rice, known professionally as Tony Rice, was an influential American bluegrass guitarist and singer who fundamentally shaped the sound of acoustic music across multiple genres. Born on June 8, 1951, Rice became renowned as a virtuosic acoustic guitar player whose work transcended traditional bluegrass boundaries, extending into progressive bluegrass, newgrass, and acoustic jazz. Throughout his career, Rice collaborated with some of acoustic music's most celebrated artists and ensembles. He performed alongside J.D. Crowe and the New South during formative years, worked with David Grisman during the creation of Dawg Music, and notably recorded and performed with Jerry Garcia.
