The Postal Service is an indietronica group from Seattle Washington featuring Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, producer Jimmy Tamborello, and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame (as well as other projects). The project formed in 2001 and took its name from the way the band would work on their songs, by sending tracks back and forth via mail due to conflicting schedules.
In 2003, the band released their sole album, Give Up. The album produced three singles, the best-known being "Such Great Heights," which spawned many notable covers, including Iron & Wine and Streetlight Manifesto.
The band received a cease and desist from the United States Postal Service, calling the band's name an infringement on trademark, however, USPS relented following an agreement for the band to promote them and perform at its annual National Executive Conference. At one point, USPS' website sold Give Up.
The band reunited in 2013, re-issuing Give Up with many bonus tracks and a tour. The band then split again, but has since returned again to tour with Gibbard's other project, Death Cab for Cutie.
