The Knack

The Knack was an American power pop band formed in Los Angeles in 1978, featuring Doug Fieger on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Berton Averre on lead guitar and backing vocals, Prescott Niles on bass, and Bruce Gary on drums. The group burst onto the music scene with explosive momentum, driven by their infectious debut single "My Sharona," which catapulted their first album, Get the Knack (1979), to number-one status across multiple countries. The band's energetic power pop sound and Fieger's charismatic vocal delivery made them instant fixtures in late-'70s rock, though their initial success would prove difficult to replicate.
Following their breakthrough debut, The Knack released ...But The Little Girls Understand (1980) and Round Trip (1981), both of which failed to match the commercial heights of their first effort. The band disbanded in 1982 but reunited periodically over the following decades, releasing Serious Fun (1991), Zoom (1998), and Normal as the Next Guy (2001). Despite their troubled relationship with the changing music landscape, The Knack maintained a devoted following and continued recording until Doug Fieger's death in 2010, which led to the band's permanent dissolution. Their final studio album, Rock & Roll Is Good for You: The Fieger/Averre Demos, arrived in 2012 as a fitting capstone to their legacy as power pop pioneers.
