Tesla

Tesla is an American hard rock band from Sacramento, California, formed in the early 1980s by bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon. Originally known as City Kidd, the group adopted the Tesla name shortly before recording their debut album when they discovered another band with a similar moniker already existed. By 1984, the classic lineup solidified with the additions of vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarist Tommy Skeoch, and drummer Troy Luccketta — a quintet that would define the band's sound throughout their initial run and establish them as key players during the hair metal boom of the 1980s.
Tesla's commercial breakthrough came with their 1986 debut, Mechanical Resonance, which spawned hit singles including "Modern Day Cowboy" and a cover of "Little Suzi." The band's second album, The Great Radio Controversy (1989), peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 and produced the top-ten single "Love Song." Their acoustic third album, Five Man Acoustical Jam (1990), became their most successful release, reaching No. 12 on the charts and featuring their signature cover of "Signs," which climbed to No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent releases like Psychotic Supper (1991) and Bust a Nut (1994) maintained their chart presence, though without matching the radio success of their earlier work.
After disbanding in 1996, Tesla reunited in 2000 with the live album and tour Replugged, beginning a new chapter of touring and recording that continues to the present day. Guitarist Tommy Skeoch departed in 2006 and was replaced by Dave Rude, while the band has remained creatively active with recent releases including the studio album Shock (2019) and the covers collection Homage (2026). With over 14 million albums sold in the United States alone, Tesla's legacy as enduring hard rock architects remains firmly cemented.
