Steep Canyon Rangers

Steep Canyon Rangers is an American bluegrass band based in Asheville and Brevard, North Carolina, that has become one of the genre's most distinctive contemporary voices. Originally formed in 2000, the quintet remained relatively under the radar until 2009, when they began a transformative collaboration with actor and accomplished banjoist Steve Martin. The partnership proved creatively fruitful, with SCR and Martin performing together in various configurations — initially as a sextet alongside the band's traditional quintet setup — while maintaining their respective solo projects and collaborative efforts.
The band's discography reflects their prolific output and creative ambitions. Steep Canyon Rangers have released nine solo albums alongside two collaborative projects with Martin, establishing themselves as serious recording artists within the bluegrass tradition. Their 2012 collaboration with Martin, Rare Bird Alert, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, while their 2013 solo effort Nobody Knows You secured the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album — a significant recognition of their artistry. In May 2013, the band expanded their creative circle further, beginning to perform with Edie Brickell after she and Martin co-wrote and recorded the track "Love Has Come for You."
The Steep Canyon Rangers' Grammy win for Nobody Knows You stands as a career-defining achievement, cementing their status as leaders in modern bluegrass. Their willingness to collaborate across generational and genre lines — from Steve Martin's pop-culture profile to Edie Brickell's singer-songwriter sensibility — has helped bring bluegrass to audiences that might not otherwise seek out the genre, while their solo work demonstrates an unwavering commitment to bluegrass tradition and excellence.
