Sir Richard Bishop is an American composer, guitarist, and vocalist best known as a founding member of the experimental rock band Sun City Girls, the prolific outfit he co-founded with brother Alan Bishop in 1981. During the band's 26-year run through 2007, Sun City Girls produced an extensive discography spanning over 50 full-length albums, establishing Bishop as a boundary-pushing figure in avant-garde and experimental music. Since launching his solo career in earnest in 2005, Bishop has become renowned for his eclectic approach to composition, drawing from worldwide musical traditions and performing extensively across Europe, Australia, and the United States alongside artists including Will Oldham, Animal Collective, and Devendra Banhart.
Bishop's solo discography showcases an artist unafraid to explore diverse sonic territories. His debut, Salvador Kali (Revenant Records, 1998), introduced his encyclopedic approach to composition and global influences, followed by the improvisational Improvika (2004) and the adventurous Fingering the Devil (2005). His work with the Drag City label proved particularly fruitful, yielding Polytheistic Fragments (2007) and the Omar Khorshid tribute The Freak of Araby (2009), the latter marking his first album with a full supporting band. In 2010, Bishop collaborated with Ben Chasny and Chris Corsano on False Flag through the supergroup Rangda, while also co-founding the Sublime Frequencies label with Alan Bishop and Hisham Mayet, an imprint dedicated to releasing obscure recordings from Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and beyond.
Through his prolific output and collaborative spirit, Bishop has established himself as a vital figure in experimental and world music circles, respected for his deep scholarship and fearless sonic exploration. His influence extends across generations of musicians and his work continues to inspire those seeking to transcend genre boundaries and draw from the world's rich musical traditions.
