Mickey Hart

Mickey Hart, born Michael Steven Hartman on September 11, 1943, is an American percussionist best known as one of the two drummers of the legendary rock band Grateful Dead. Joining the band in September 1967, Hart brought a dynamic and innovative approach to the Dead's rhythm section, complementing fellow drummer Bill Kreutzmann in a dual-percussion setup that became a defining characteristic of the band's sound. Together, Hart and Kreutzmann earned the nickname "the rhythm devils" for their interplay and mastery of complex polyrhythmic patterns that pushed the boundaries of rock drumming. Hart's tenure with the Dead spanned two distinct periods: from September 1967 until February 1971, and again from October 1974 until the band's final show in July 1995, making him integral to some of rock music's most expansive and exploratory eras.
As a member of one of rock's most influential bands, Hart contributed to countless iconic recordings and performances that defined the psychedelic rock and jam band genres. His work with the Grateful Dead established him as a pioneering force in percussion and rhythm innovation, influencing generations of musicians and solidifying his place in rock history. Hart's legacy extends beyond his drumming prowess to his role in shaping the Grateful Dead's distinctive sound — a sound that continues to resonate with fans and musicians alike, cementing his status as one of rock music's most essential percussionists.
