Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey, dubbed the "Songbird Supreme," is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress whose five-octave vocal range and innovative melismatic singing style have made her one of the most influential artists in modern music history. Born on March 27, 1969, Carey rose to international prominence with her self-titled 1990 debut album, becoming the only artist to achieve five consecutive number-one singles in the US — a historic feat that launched her into the stratosphere of pop stardom. Ranked as the fifth-greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone in 2023, Carey has transcended music to become a cultural phenomenon, lending her talents to film and television while building a legacy that extends far beyond the recording studio.
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Carey crafted a series of blockbuster albums that defined the era, including the multi-platinum Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995), followed by her genre-blending work on Butterfly (1997) and Rainbow (1999). After a period of career transition, she triumphantly returned with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), cementing her status as a perennial force in pop music. Beyond her studio output, Carey has become the "Queen of Christmas" thanks to the enduring popularity of her 1994 holiday album Merry Christmas, with its lead single "All I Want for Christmas Is You" establishing itself as a cultural institution and the best-selling holiday single by a woman.
Carey's accolades underscore her unparalleled success: she holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist (19), a female songwriter (18), and a female producer (15). Her achievements include five Grammy Awards, 10 American Music Awards, 19 World Music Awards, and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. With estimated sales exceeding 220 million records worldwide, Carey stands as one of the best-selling music artists in history, a legacy further solidified by her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, which reached number one on The New York Times Best Seller list.
