Mariachi El Bronx is the mariachi music project of The Bronx, an American punk rock band from Los Angeles that originally formed in 2002. Led by vocalist Matt Caughthran and guitarists Joby J. Ford and Ken Horne, alongside bass guitarist Brad Magers and drummer Joey Castillo, the band has built a distinctive reputation by exploring multiple musical identities. While maintaining their core punk rock output with six studio albums, the group has simultaneously crafted a parallel discography of mariachi music under the Mariachi El Bronx moniker, demonstrating their willingness to push artistic boundaries and honor the rich musical traditions of their community.
The band's unique dual-identity approach has resulted in four full-length mariachi albums that showcase the versatility and musical sophistication of its members. This bold artistic strategy — balancing aggressive punk instrumentation with traditional Mexican brass and string arrangements — has allowed The Bronx to reach audiences across multiple genres and cultural backgrounds. Through their Mariachi El Bronx project, the band has proven that genre boundaries need not be limiting, instead using their platform to celebrate and perpetuate traditional mariachi music while maintaining their rebellious punk rock roots.
