King Britt is an American record producer, composer, DJ, and performer from Philadelphia who has spent decades bridging electronic music with broader artistic and cultural conversations. Born in 1968, Britt gained early prominence as the original DJ for the Grammy-winning hip-hop group Digable Planets, touring with the collective from 1992 to 1994 during their breakthrough period. Since then, he has established himself as a multifaceted artist whose eclectic approach encompasses electronic, house, disco, techno, rave, and experimental music across a diverse range of projects and collaborations.
Throughout his career, Britt has released music under several project names, including Sylk 130, Fhloston Paradigm, Scuba, and The Nova Dream Sequence, while also working as a composer and producer with artists such as De La Soul, Madlib, and Kathy Sledge. His remix portfolio is particularly impressive, featuring high-profile work with Tori Amos, Miles Davis, Saul Williams, Solange, Calvin Harris, and Dua Lipa, among others. Beyond his recording output, Britt has collaborated on film and television projects with acclaimed director Michael Mann.
In recent years, Britt has shifted focus toward academic pursuits and research, serving as a Professor of Computer Music at University of California San Diego. His scholarly work centers on Afrofuturism in music and the pioneering contributions of people of color to electronic music — a subject deeply connected to his own artistic legacy. Through both his creative output and his teaching, Britt continues to shape conversations around diversity, innovation, and the future of electronic music.
