Kimberley Ann Deal is an American rock musician best known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Breeders and as the original bassist and co-vocalist of the groundbreaking alternative rock band the Pixies. Deal joined the Pixies in 1986, appearing on the albums Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, and Doolittle before the band went on hiatus in the early 1990s. Following the Pixies' breakup, she pivoted her focus to the Breeders, a project she had launched in parallel with her former bandmates Tanya Donelly, Josephine Wiggs, and Britt Walford — a lineup that would be refined when her twin sister Kelley joined the group.
The Breeders achieved significant commercial success with the platinum-selling album Last Splash (1993), which featured the breakthrough single "Cannonball." After a hiatus prompted by Kelley's rehabilitation in 1994, Deal pursued the short-lived project the Amps under the stage name Tammy Ampersand, recording the album Pacer (1995). She returned to the Breeders with Title TK (2002) and Mountain Battles (2008), while also reuniting with the Pixies from 2004 to 2013. The Breeders achieved a major reunion with All Nerve (2018), bringing together Deal, her sister Kelley, Wiggs, and Macpherson for the first time since Last Splash. In 2024, Deal released her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More, marking a significant new chapter in her multifaceted career.
Deal's influence on alternative and indie rock remains substantial, having helped define the sound of both the Pixies and the Breeders across multiple decades. Her work continues to resonate with audiences and musicians alike, cementing her legacy as one of rock music's most innovative and resilient artists.
