Johann Johannsson

Jóhann Jóhannsson was an Icelandic composer whose distinctive sonic language bridged the gap between classical orchestration and contemporary electronic music. Born on September 19, 1969, Jóhannsson built a multifaceted career creating music across theatre, dance, television, and film — mediums through which his innovative approach to composition reached international audiences. His ability to weave traditional and modern elements into emotionally resonant scores established him as one of the most compelling film composers of his generation before his untimely passing on February 9, 2018.
Beginning his solo recording career in 2002, Jóhannsson steadily released albums that showcased his compositional sophistication. His work in film brought him widespread recognition, with landmark scores for Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival, as well as James Marsh's The Theory of Everything. In 2016, he signed with Deutsche Grammophon, releasing his final solo album Orphée through the prestigious label. His only directorial effort, Last and First Men, premiered at the Manchester International Festival in 2017, where Jóhannsson performed the score live alongside the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
Jóhannsson's contributions to cinema were recognized with multiple Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score, including for The Theory of Everything and Sicario. He won a Golden Globe for Best Original Score for The Theory of Everything and earned a second Golden Globe nomination for Arrival. Beyond his accolades, Jóhannsson's posthumously released scores for Mary Magdalene and Mandy stand as a testament to his enduring artistic vision and the profound impact his work continues to have on contemporary film music.
