Great Big Sea

Great Big Sea was a Canadian folk rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador that built a legendary career by transforming traditional folk songs into high-energy rock anthems. Drawing from the island's rich 500-year heritage of Irish, Scottish, and Cornish influences, the band specialized in electrifying interpretations of Newfoundland sea shanties and folk standards, creating a distinctive sound that resonated far beyond their Maritime roots. Their infectious live performances and commitment to celebrating regional musical traditions made them one of Canada's most beloved exports.
The band's commercial success was staggering, with eleven of their albums achieving Gold certification in Canada alone, including four Platinum certifications and two multi-platinum releases. Between 1996 and 2016, Great Big Sea ranked as the sixteenth best-selling Canadian artist in the country and the sixth best-selling Canadian band, a testament to their enduring appeal and prolific output throughout two decades of recording.
Though Great Big Sea has officially retired, their legacy continues through former members Alan Doyle and Séan McCann, who have embarked on solo careers that frequently feature music from the band's extensive catalog. Their influence on Canadian folk rock remains significant, having proven that traditional maritime music could captivate mainstream audiences while maintaining its authenticity and cultural pride.
