Richard David James, known professionally as Aphex Twin, is an Irish musician, composer, and DJ who has been a pioneering force in electronic music since 1988. Born in Limerick and raised in Cornwall by his Welsh parents, James emerged from the UK's late-1980s free party scene before making an immediate impact with his 1991 debut EP Analogue Bubblebath. His idiosyncratic approach to production — drawing from techno, ambient, acid, and jungle — quickly established him as a distinctive voice, leading him to co-found the independent label Rephlex Records the same year. His 1992 debut album Selected Ambient Works 85–92 garnered widespread critical acclaim and led to a signing with Warp Records, setting the stage for a career that would cement his status as one of electronic music's most influential artists.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, James crafted a remarkable discography that showcased his fearless experimentation and technical mastery. Releases including Selected Ambient Works Volume II, the Richard D. James Album (1996), and standout singles like "Come to Daddy" (1997) and "Windowlicker" (1999) — the latter two featuring groundbreaking visuals from director Chris Cunningham — brought him international recognition. After departing Warp with Drukqs (2001), James continued releasing music on Rephlex under various aliases, including the Analord series and releases as the Tuss. He returned to Warp in 2014 with Syro, which earned him the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album, followed by critically acclaimed EPs including Cheetah (2016) and Collapse (2018).
Aphex Twin's legacy as a visionary electronic artist has been cemented by consistent critical acclaim and industry recognition. His 2023 single "Blackbox Life Recorder 21f" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Recording, demonstrating his continued relevance nearly four decades into his career. Journalists from The New York Times, NME, The Guardian, and Mixmag have repeatedly cited him as one of the most important figures in contemporary electronic music, and his influence on intelligent dance music and experimental production techniques remains unparalleled. Since 2015, James has been sporadically sharing new material on SoundCloud, maintaining his enigmatic presence while continuing to push the boundaries of electronic sound.
