Carsten Nicolai is a German artist and musician who has built a multifaceted career at the intersection of sound, visual art, and conceptual practice. Born on September 18, 1965, in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz), Nicolai adopted the moniker Alva Noto to distinguish his sonic work from his broader artistic practice.
